pet receiving home visit form a vet

Vet home visits: can I get a home visit for my pet?

You may remember a time in which your doctor made house calls when you weren’t well, but these days home visits from your doctor are pretty unusual. Yet, when it comes to our pets, it’s not uncommon for a vet to pay a visit to your home – and there are some circumstances in which a home visit can be a big help.

Here are some situations in which a home visit from the vet is the best possible option.

Elderly or unwell pets

Sometimes our pets are just too unwell or frail to travel, and putting them in the car to drive them to your local vet may just make them worse. You may have an elderly dog with arthritis who’s just too stiff and uncomfortable to travel in the car. Or perhaps you have a timid, anxious cat, who hates being transported in a pet carrier let alone the stress of a busy waiting room.

Veterinary house calls bring the expertise of your vet to you, while your four-legged friend stays in the comfort of your home.

More than one pet

Getting multiple animals to the vet when there’s just one of you can be a nightmare! Just how are you supposed to shepherd three cats in three separate boxes, and drive safely to your local veterinary clinic?! A vet home visit is a great choice if you have more than one animal and can’t handle the logistics of multiple visits.

Parents of small children

Leaving the house when you have a baby or small child is difficult enough without your pet in tow! If you don’t have a trusted friend or family member who can stay with your child while you take your pet to his appointment, let the vet come to you.

You don’t drive

Perhaps you don’t drive, you have mobility issues, you live in a remote area, or your car is in the garage. Whatever the circumstances that make getting to the vets tricky, booking a vet home visit could be the solution.

Vet services that can’t be provided at home

It goes without saying that there are some veterinary services that can only be provided at your local vet clinic. These include:

  • Ultrasound scans
  • X-rays
  • Surgery
  • Administration of intravenous fluid
  • Chemotherapy and radiation treatments
  • Dentistry

Whatever your cause for concern, if you need help and advice from your vet, get in touch with your local veterinary and pet care clinic today, to ask about booking a home visit.
