How to keep your pet safe during stormy weather

But what are the best ways to keep your pets safe and calm during a storm? Here are our top tips. 

Check the weather forecast

Keep an eye out to see what the weather is doing. It’s better to take shorter walks during calmer periods if it’s safe to do so, rather than risk going for a longer walk when the weather is likely to become dangerous. 

If you do go for a walk, stay clear of woodland areas and keep your phone with you at all times in case of an emergency.

Avoid walking your dog in extreme weather

If the weather is too extreme, stay indoors and follow the guidance in your area. To keep your dog mentally stimulated, you can keep them engaged by playing games.

Wear suitable clothing

Make sure your dog is wrapped up warm and visible with a reflective lead and collar. It also pays to make sure that your dog’s microchip details are up to date, just in case they bolt during unfamiliar weather. 

Secure your garden

If you have a garden or ouside space, make sure your back gates are secured and shut. If your dog is in the garden, keep an eye on them to make sure they don't run off.

Create a safe environment 

Every pet should have a safe zone. A place to go that is theirs and theirs alone, where they know nobody will intrude or disturb them. Pooches love having a dedicated den, and a crate is a great option for some. If your dog doesn’t use a crate or you’ve got a cat, create a safe space in a secure environment using plenty of blankets. 

Drown out the noise 

Turn up the tv or play some calming music to help drown out the noises of the storm. If your pet can’t hear the banging and rattling, they are more likely to remain calm during the bad weather.

Make sure your cat can get inside 

Cats spend lots of their time exploring their surroundings, but during bad weather, it’s best to keep them inside. If your cat isn’t at home when the storm starts, make sure that they can enter via a window or cat flap so they can shelter from the weather. 

Move your small furies inside

Keep your rabbits & guinea pigs sheltered from the elements and move them inside if possible. If moving your pets inside isn’t an option, make sure that they are in a sheltered area, such as a garage or shed.
